Keeping Little Smiles Bright: Children’s Dental Health Month

Dental Advice

February is Children’s Dental Health Month, a perfect time for us to highlight the importance of good oral hygiene for children. Establishing healthy dental habits early on can lead to a lifetime of bright smiles. In this post, we will discuss essential tips for maintaining your child’s dental health and the significance of regular dental visits.

Essential Oral Hygiene Tips for Children

1. Start Early

Begin brushing your child’s teeth as soon as they appear. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a small amount of fluoride toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice) for children under three years old, make sure you are accompanying your child at brush time, twice a day, even when they are brushing independently.  We recommend supervising brushing until the age of 8.

2. Make Brushing Fun

Incorporate fun into oral hygiene by letting children choose their toothbrushes and toothpaste flavours, there are plenty of their favourite characters available. Singing songs or using apps that encourage brushing can make it an enjoyable routine.  You can start them using a simple battery operated toothbrush from the age of 3 onwards under supervision.

3. Establish a Routine

Brush twice a day—once in the morning before breakfast and once last thing before bedtime. Make it a family affair to help reinforce the habit!

4. Don’t Forget Flossing

No, we don’t mean the dance move, although, there’s no rule against that! Once your child has two teeth that touch, it’s time to introduce flossing. Teach them how to do it gently and make it part of their daily routine.

5. Limit Sugary Snacks and Drinks

Encourage a balanced diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Limit sugary snacks and drinks, as they can contribute to tooth decay.

6. Regular Dental Checks

Schedule regular dental check-ups with us at Ocean Village Dental Clinic every six months. Early detection of dental issues can prevent more extensive treatment down the line.

7. Use Mouthguards for Sports

If your child plays contact sports, consider investing in a mouthguard to protect their teeth from injury, we can help you with that too.  This is so important!

Educating Kids About Dental Health

Engage your children in discussions about why dental health is essential. Use age-appropriate books and videos to teach them about cavities, the importance of brushing, and the role of dental professionals, we will be sharing some on our socials this month and saving them into a highlight, so, you can always check back.
